Just When We Thought it was Safe...

This afternoon our handy hombre, Gus, called us to the backyard and pointed to something large, brown and pulsating about 7 feet off the ground in one of our palm trees. Turned out to be a mass of bees about 18 inches long, 12 inches across at the top and tapering down...a living, breathing mass of bees...probably Africanized bees, aka "Killer Bees". Meg and I had heard last fall, much to our dismay, that there were killer bees in the 'hood'. Gus told us that 3 villagers have been killed by bee attacks in the last few months - disturbing odds for Cuyutlan, a village of 400-800 people. Yikes!

Our neighbours had had a swarm of bees in one of their palm trees in the fall and were told to call the police. (The swarm had moved on by the time the police and bee-keepers arrived). Gus made a call to the police around 7pm. No sign of anyone, so far...it's nearly midnight. The bees are still out there in the dark.

Day 2 - The swarm is still buzzing...increasing in activity as the sun warms up the day. Called the police again. I took off for Comala...Meg stayed to do chores. She says that she heard what sounded like a small helicopter and saw the swarm move very slowly, en masse, up and away...heading towards the coco palm plantation to the north. Adios abejas asesinas!!

I'm keeping my eyes and ears open in case these creatures make it into our nab and our palms. Great to see you two at the Nick and Roger bash this evening. We'll get together before we all head up to el norte in a couple of weeks.
